Get a Free QuoteWhen it comes to glass fencing, the line between pool fencing and balustrades often overlaps. Both systems provide a seamless, frameless look, and both are designed to maximise views without compromising safety.
The key difference lies in compliance and performance requirements:

Built to meet NZ Building Code Clause F9 (Means of Restricting Access to Residential Pools). The focus is on child safety, with self-closing gates, minimum heights, and non-climbable zones.
Frameless Glass Pool Fencing
Built to meet NZ Building Code Clause B1 (Structure) and NZS 4223.3:2016. These systems are engineered to resist impact and crowd loads, acting as a barrier to prevent falls.
Frameless Glass BalustradesBecause BelAire’s frameless structural glass systems are engineered to the highest standards, they can often perform both roles at once. For example, on a deck or balcony with a pool below, the same installation can act as a safe pool barrier while also functioning as a compliant balustrade.
Get a Free QuoteYes, that's correct! If you're using standard 12mm toughened glass panels for your balustrade, a handrail is generally required to comply with New Zealand Building Code Clause F4 and NZS4223:2016 standards.
However, if you opt for Sentry Glass panels, you can achieve a seamless look without a top rail. Sentry Glass panels have a stiff interlayer between two laminated panels, allowing them to remain standing even if shattered. This makes them compliant without the need for a handrail, although they are more costly—approximately 4 to 5 times the price of standard toughened glass panels.
For a minimal and compliant handrail option, we offer a 21mm high stainless steel handrail that provides safety without significantly obstructing the view.
Use a glass pool fence calculator to estimate how many panels, spigots, hinges and latches you’ll need based on the length and shape of your pool area. This helps avoid costly over- or under-ordering and ensures your layout meets code.
